21.03.18 – Is it possible to see turtles here?

The answer is yes, it is possible! The Lobosonda crew regularly has the pleasure of encountering Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) out at sea, especially when the weather is as warm and sunny as it was today during our trip on the Stenella. The animals spend their neritic phase here in Madeira and often surface to bask in the sunshine. According to local biologists, most of the Loggerheads encountered around the oceanic archipelago hatched on the shores of Florida so they already travelled quite far to get here.

Much to the joy of many of the guests on board our speedboat, we had a sighting of a young Caretta today. Of course we also saw a number of cetaceans that socialized with one another near our vessel, with some even engaging in mating behavior.
